I highly recommend eating organic fruits, vegetables, meat and eggs since they are much lower in pesticide chemical residues, hormones and other chemicals and much higher in nutrients (see table below) as well as often tasting better.

Increased nutrients found in organic foods vs. conventional foods

  • Potassium +13%
  • Calcium +56%
  • Magnesium +49%
  • Iron +290%
  • Copper +34%
  • Manganese +28%
  • Protein +12%
  • Essential Amino Acids +35%
  • Nitrates +69%
  • Phosphorous +6%

The pesticide residues and various other chemicals that maintain color and ‘freshness’ on fruit and vegetables, are all highly toxic and many are carcinogenic and contribute to the onset of many degenerative diseases.

All fruit and vegetables (even organic) should be washed in a special fruit and vegetable wash (made from coconut oil, colloidal silver and a few other natural cleansers) such as the one produced by Envirocare, that can be purchased at a health or organic food store. Simply add a few drops to a tub of water, soak your produce for 20-30 mins and then remove and rinse.

Organic and free-range meats and eggs are much better quality in terms of protein to fat content (the animals get more exercise and are healthier) and more importantly, are hormone and chemical free.

Organic eggs have a much better ratio of 1:1 Omega 3 fatty acids to Omega 6
Fatty acids as opposed to a 1:20+ ratio found in non-organic eggs. The Omega 3 to Omega 6 balance is important for prevention of heart disease.

Organic food may cost a little more, however it is an essential investment in your health. In fact, organic food is actually better value when comparing  nutritional quality and actual quantity of food you receive for your money. In straightforward nutritional analyses, organic food tends to have more in it, both in terms of dry weight and nutrients. This is because organically grown produce must be grown in enriched soil and because modern methods of farming with agrochemicals can speed up the growth of a plant, changing its structure to be more full of water. In other words, although it may still look like a carrot you are actually buying less food.

Unfortunately at the moment there is a degree of inconsistency with the labelling of organic food. In some countries such as Australia, a company can legally call their food organic without any certification. Obviously you should only buy foods that are certified organic by a reputable governing body. If you are lucky you may also find food that is Biodynamic, which is the highest grade of organic food and is subject to even more stringent protocols for certification.
