As per MIL STD 130, the Department of Defense requires that many items be assigned an IUID marking in order to mark, identify, and track the military property effectively. MIL STD 130 consolidates the different specifications and standards which are involved in the creation of the IUID marking. In any conflicts between MIL STD 130 and other documentation, regarding IUID marking or any other stated guidelines, MIL STD 130 takes complete precedence. Some items, such as cell phones and automobiles, are considered non IUID items as they have their own identification numbers already assigned to them by their respective manufacturers.
