Elimination of vermin from homes and commercial premises is very important as they can cause serious harm to people in a variety of ways. Cockroaches and mice are common in many people’s homes and they need to be effectively controlled. The presence of vermin or insect pests in or around a house can be hazardous to one’s health as they can be carriers of disease, or their droppings can spread disease. It  is an indicator of poor sanitary conditions within the property as they can cause serious problems to human beings if not controlled properly. Since they can bring about serious health problems by contaminating foodstuffs, pest and vermin control must be handled carefully and should you suspect that you have been effected by a pest or vermin infection, you must seek medical treatment as early as possible to avoid serious problems.

Effective Vermin Control methods
Great care must be taken when installing effective vermin prevention in your commercial property, some of the following methods may be of assistance:

  • Maintain physical barriers to deny access by vermin to edible production and storage areas.
  • Keep storage areas dry during production and non-production periods.
  • Extensive cleaning and sanitation program to include external areas of the area, and vigorous housekeeping.
  • Keep an interior regime of indicator baits and traps to verify that no vermin has breached the control measures and entered the premises.

Vermin that require pest control

Cockroaches, mice, rodents, and insects are common examples of the types of intruders that require pest control. One of the best ways to prevent vermin entering houses or to eliminate their presence is the use of physical barriers. The barrier must be effective, and usually a combination of deterrents is required to achieve successful prevention. We can also control vermin by using predators – the vermin’s natural enemies – such as lady beetles, whiteflies, mealy-bugs and mites. Spiders, centipedes, lacewings, ground beetles and ants are also some of the beneficial bugs. Parasitoids – insects that live in and eventually kill a larger host insect – are another option for the effective control of vermin. Parasitoids such as miniature wasps lay their egg inside the eggs or bodies such as tomato hornworms and once the eggs hatch, the offspring kill their insect hosts.

Beetles and moths found in the kitchen area are another major nuisance to people. We can restrict their presence by keeping the kitchen in a hygienic state. Take precautionary actions such as wiping down countertops, stove and cabinets with warm water, keeping garbage cans covered and keeping food in sealed containers. We can control insect infestations by denying them access to our food sources, using chemical treatment, minimizing odors, and establishing strict sanitation measures. Hide receivable and inedible areas immediately adjacent to or under slaughter floors should be insect proofed as far as possible and all sumps covered with checker plate.
Rabbits, foxes, birds, rats, and mice are also commonly sighted vermin. Removal of waste material on time can help to prevent them imposing their presence in your property. Additionally, trap and bait techniques, and chemical control are the effective vermin control methods, which are widely conventional.

People should take necessary actions to avoid personal contamination from vermin. You can control the contamination from vermin by avoiding personal contact, and by maintaining a high level of personal hygiene.
