You would have not heard much about the Harajuku before 2004. This was when Gwen Stefani launched her first solo album, entitled Love Angel Music Baby, which was a runaway success. At the time, this success had branded Stefani as the next-Madonna. Well, at about the same time, Stefani launched something else that would bring her success and limelight. After launching her first solo album, Stefani also began the Harajuku Lovers line of clothes and accessories. It is needless to say that this, too, was a runaway success. What inspired her to name her clothesline Harajuku Lovers was the wonderful tradition of the Harajuku district, a famous district in Japan. This little district has a very peculiar tradition. Local teenagers come here and hang out on Sundays wearing Gothic Lolita outfits just to have fun and to be themselves. It is a way of showing that they are independent. Some of these outfits are indeed shocking. These dressing-up romps have become iconic and symbolize the freedom of expression that Japanese girls have traditionally been prohibited from. The Harajuku tradition has become a major tourist attraction and foreigners vie to be photographed with these very unusually dressed Japanese girls. The Harajuku Lovers clothesline is another factor that puts this lovely place on the hotspot. As a clothes line, the Harajuku Lovers has gained prominence and popularity all over the world; in turn, this has inspired others to learn about this unusual statement of freedom in a land that usually discourages such blatant disregard for authority.
