If you have a knee brace then you should know how to use it properly.  If you incorrectly use a knee brace then you could cause harm to your knee.

If a doctor gives you a knee brace then he or she should provide proper instruction on your brace.  They should show you how to properly put it on and secure it to your leg.  You should follow the instructions by your doctor so you don’t use it improperly.

Most knee braces should be put on carefully.  You should be sure that the hinges are exactly where you bend your knee.  If there are straps, tapes, and hook-and loop tapes then you should fasten them around your leg.  While you are exercising you should be sure that the brace doesn’t move out of place.  If your brace is not positioned properly then it could harm your knee rather than provide the protection you need.

In order for a knee brace to work effectively, you need to wear it at all times when you are exercising and doing any activities that involve working the knee.  Even if the exercise seems minor to you it may put a strain on your knee that is unnecessary.  To be sure your knee is fully protected and you get the most out of your brace then you should wear it during activities.

Another thing to remember is that just because you have a knee brace on doesn’t mean you cannot still injure your knee.  You still must do proper warm ups before you begin your exercise.  You should stretch properly and warm up your muscles before you give your body a work out.  Knee braces like the donjoy knee brace provide protection but cannot stop injuries when you don’t warm up prior to your exercise.  People who don’t warm up are at risk to knee problems, ankle injuries, and torn ligaments.

Knee braces are effective if you use them properly.  Never take advantage of your brace and assume you are totally protected from anything.  Also, remember to wear your brace all of the time.  You cannot say the brace doesn’t work if you don’t wear your brace when you are supposed to be.
