The venerable ice bag has been used for centuries and is an old but easy method of relieving hurt bruises, swelled injuries, and painful conditions such as arthritis. Athletes know that using cold therapy can speed up healing. Arthritis pains can diminish with an ice bag that offers you comfort. Here are some tried and true methods of using ice packs to alleviate some pains.

You can use an ice pack 3 times daily but remember to put a cloth between the bag and your flesh. Some ice bags are made specifically for this purpose and usually don't require the extra cloth, especially those with lining. Don't keep it on the affected area for longer than 20 minutes. Be extra careful when using it near your eyes and other delicate body parts and do not go to sleep with the ice bag still on you.

Some people like to add a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water so that the ice pack conforms to your body angles. The ratio is generally 3:1 water to alcohol. A cold pack should be used for up to 72 hours, but you should always consult your doctor to determine what is needed for a specific injury or pain.

When treating arthritis, William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR says: "I often recommend that my patients use ice packs on the affected joint in order to minimize inflammation and reduce pain, especially with a newly inflamed joint. This can be helpful for many forms of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, gout, osteoarthritis, pseudogout, ankylosing spondylitis, and many others. It should be remembered, however, that icing usually causes stiffness to the local tissues. Accordingly, heat applications can sometimes work best early in the day by relaxing the muscles around the joints, while ice applications at the end of the day can minimize the inflammation resulting from the daily activities."

Sometimes it's smart to reach for an ice bag before you reach for that bottle of pills.
