Africa is a continent that boasts remarkable diversity and rich in resources. There are numerous ways to explore a region that is as vast as Africa; however, safaris and expeditions offer a unique experience as you have the opportunity to come face to face with wild animals in their natural habitat.

Available activities and lodging
When you are on an African safari or expedition game viewing is the primary attribute, you can also take part in a huge amount of rather varied activities. These could include anything from birding, canoeing and even interacting with the local people. Most safari lodges offer guided nature walks that provide you with interesting information about indigenous plant species found in Africa. The majority of safari lodges (also known as ‘bush hotels’) offer an ideal African experience. Most people who are travelling through Africa would be thrilled to stay in such a lodge during their African safari or expedition. Safari lodges usually present facilities and services that are on the same level as urban hotels.

When you are on an African safari it is always a good idea to be informed and updated about the weather conditions of the region. National Parks are generally best visited in dry seasons when the wildlife tends to congregate at waterholes and the roads are also easier to navigate, although some parks are equally enjoyable during the rainy months of winter.

The origin of safari
In Swahili the word ‘safari’ originally meant ‘journey’ which is further associated to ‘hunting for survival’ and ‘exploration of lands’. A safari is usually travelled by foot as this is the best way to experience the life and natural habitat of a region and also reaching the foundation of the natives and their unique cultures.

Generally walking trails are constantly maintained so that when explorers are being guided along their courses it is safer and easier to walk through. Visitors are not only limited to walking along trails, since there are many other options with regard to forms of travel available with each safari package. Other potential modes of transportation could include driving safaris, canoeing, horseback riding or even elephant back riding. It all depends on where and what kind of safari you decide to go on. Such a variety of possible transportation modes contribute additional flavour and thrill while you are on your tour. Often various ways of transportation can also allow access into deeper domains and uncharted places.

It is helpful if you have basic knowledge of some of the practices, culture and etiquette of the local people you encounter. This way you will be able to adopt well with the localities.

Life on an African safari or expedition is a true embodiment of serenity. It makes you realise how spectacular creation is, as well as offering you insight to the unique cultures of different African tribes.
